THIS FALL, GO AU NATURALE WITH THE GUIDANCE OF SUSAN CIMINELLI, SKINCARE EXPERT
TO THE STARS, SUSAN CIMINELLI
The skincare world's foremost authority, Susan Ciminelli, owner of the Susan Ciminelli Day Spa on top of Bergdorf
Goodman and author of The Ciminelli Solution: A 7-Day Plan for Radiant Skin, returns to THE FAMILY GROOVE to give
us the glow down on inner and outer beauty.
THE FAMILY GROOVE: In your book, you mention eating produce that is in season. Why is this so important?
Susan Ciminelli: In-season produce is at its freshest and contains the highest level of antioxidants and vitamins.
I recommend trying to eat organic fruits and vegetables because they don't have any harmful pesticides or toxins—which are all very damaging to your health and skin. If you can't buy organic produce, then thoroughly scrub and peel conventionally grown fruits and vegetable before eating them.
TFG:What are five ways to eat for detoxification?
| SC: | 1. | Eliminate processed foods. |
| 2. | Cut out soda and carbonated beverages. | |
| 3. | Drink water with lemon—1/2 ounce of spring water for every pound you weigh. | |
| 4. | Start your day with a detoxification beverage. Water with a squeeze of lemon is one option. You can find more recipes in my book. | |
| 5. | Don't eat after 8 pm. |
TFG: What are some practical tips for good skin care at home?
SC: A good cleansing routine is the foundation for beautiful skin.
Wash your hands and body with a gel cleanser not soap. Soap clogs the pores and doesn't allow the skin to breathe.
Wash your face with a good gel cleanser and warm water (never hot). Rinse with cool then repeat.
Use a clean towel every time you wash your face. Pat dry.
Use natural skin care products that don't contain any paraffin wax, perfume, mineral oil or SD alcohol.
Steam your pores once a week and follow with a mask.
TFG: Let's talk apple cider vinegar: you can use it in a bath and drink it. What's so healing about it?
SC: Apple cider vinegar has long been known to be a true panacea. People report its magical healing properties, have helped everything from sinus infections to acid reflux to weight loss. Bathing in apple cider vinegar bath helps to lighten your mood, alleviate depression, negative energy and stress.
TFG: What's a cool tip for gorgeous skin this fall?
SC: Get a facial and a body wrap to balance, detoxify and rid the skin of of dead cells. As I mentioned last month, my spas have a great oxy-mist face treatment that gives a boost of oxygen and antioxidants in to the skin.
TFG: Is there an insider's trick to good skin?
SC: No tricks, just a healthy diet and a good skin cleansing and hydrating routine with products that have all-natural ingredients.
TFG: Tell us about your teas.
SC: My teas are delicious and very powerful. They are custom-blended with all-natural ingredients combined especially to help repair hair, skin and nails, minimize pores and reduce blackheads and blemishes. For example, our Pink Passion is flavored with blood orange and pear, which are great mood-lifters. Our Afternoon Delight, has mint, lemon myrtle and mixed spices. This teas actually aids in digestion and elimination and reduces pores, blackheads and blemishes.
TFG: What kind of a skin care regimen should children follow?
SC: The same as adults. Always wash your face at least twice daily. Wash your hands before you wash face or touch food. Maintain a healthy diet. Make sure your children brush their teeth and tongue twice daily, too.
