HAIR TO FALL FOR
GET GORGEOUS HAIR THIS AUTUMN WITH HELPFUL HINTS FROM CELEBRITY HAIR GURUS

As summer’s hazy days come to and end, it’s time to give your frazzled, sun-stressed hair a much-needed makeover.
When seeking a hair update, think outside the basic trim box, advise some of the country’s top stylists. For soft, sexy,
of-the-moment hair, follow their expert suggestions:

Go Darker!

This fall, brunettes are having more fun. “We’re moving away from the blonde bombshells to the mystery, intrigue and
confident sexuality and style of brunettes,” says Redken creative consultant Guido Palau, who created the looks for the
Fall fashion shows of designers including Marc Jacobs, Prada, Versace and Calvin Klein.Hair Fall Lady

Matrix and Louise Galvin

If you’re not a natural brunette, ask your colorist to darken your base color with a rich shade that complements your skin tone. For sparkling, multi-dimensional color, request that he or she weave in shades of mahogany, cinnamon, bronze and caramel. To protect color and keep hair vibrant and shiny, use color maintenance products like those from Matrix’s Color.smart line (go to www.matrix.com for salons) or Louise Galvin’s Sacred Locks collection (www.louisegalvin.com).

Redken and Luce

If you’re a natural brunette, Palau suggests asking your stylist for a transparent conditioning color gloss service with a product like Redken Shades EQ equalizing conditioning color gloss. This treatment will close the hair’s cuticle, adding shine and reducing frizz (visit www.redken.com for salons offering this treatment). After you leave the salon, prolong the effectiveness of this treatment by using Oscar Blandi’s Luce clear color gloss ($25, www.sephora.com).

Cutler Straightening CreamFekkai Shine Mist
Update Straight Hair with Sophisticated Layers

For a long-hair look that’s completely different, try a cut that involves profile framing, a new twist on layers developed by Pancho Soekoro, owner of Pashah salon in New York City. “With this technique, I cut a lot from around the face, framing the hair in the front as high as the chin and then cutting back really deep, which blends in all the layers,” he explains. This style, which features a good deal of fringe around the face yet none in the back, will allow you to have your cake and eat it too, explains Pancho. “You’ll have long hair, but ample layers thrown into the mix to alleviate bulkiness.”

To style this look, begin by using a volumizer like Aussie’s Aussome Volume Spray Gel ($3.59, www.americarx.com) on roots and a straightening cream like Cutler’s Straightening Cream ($17, www.cutlersalon.com) on ends. Finish with a spray gloss like Frederic Fekkai’s Glossing Sheer Shine Mist ($22.50, www.sephora.com).

Rehydrate Ringlets with Moisturizing Treatments

Summer’s sun and surf can leave hair parched, which leads to frizzy, uncontrollable curls. “In order to successfully craft any hairstyle, curly tresses must be frizz-free and smooth” says Haime Munoz, owner of the Haime Munoz Salon in New York City.  To help your hair bounce back— literally—from summer dryness, schedule an in-salon intensive hydrating treatment like Kerastase’s Elasto-Curl treatment, which is offered at New York City’s Butterfly Studio Salon. Dana Gjelaj, a stylist at the salon, explains that overly dry hair weighs down curls, which can leave ringlets flat. “The moisturizing effects of the Elasto-curl treatment will revitalize the hair’s elasticity, thus restoring its bounce,” she says.
Hair Fall 4
To replenish moisture on a daily basis, incorporate into your daily hair care routine products made especially for frizz-taming. In the shower, shampoo with Philip B’s so-amazing-it’s-worth-every-penny White Truffle Moisturizing Shampoo ($50), then condition with Grassroots Hair’s in perfect condition Deeply Moisturizing Conditioner ($8, www.kohls.com). To keep hair bouncy, once a week use a restorative hair mask like the one by C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries ($14, www.bathandbodyworks.com). When styling, begin by raking a dime-sized amount of a leave-in conditioner like Charles Worthington’s Moisture Seal Hair Healer Intensive Leave-In Conditioner ($6, www.walgreens.com) through hair, suggests celebrity stylist Tim Rogers. To protect against damage caused by heated styling aids, Munoz recommends beginning your styling routine with a defrizzing serum such as EasyStraight’s Smooth Finish Gloss ($8, www.walgreens.com).
Kerastase Mousse
Experiment with Your Hair’s Part

Part placement can define a look as well as enhance the shape of your face.  “A center part—as seen at Versace’s Fall show—makes a bold statement and is great for elongating a rounder face,” says Palau. Side parts, which Palau created for Prada’s Fall show, help to break-up longer-shaped faces. When paired with longer, fringed hair, side parts can be rebellious and mysterious, he says. Creating a no-part style requires work, says Palau. To maintain hair’s volume with this style, use a product that adds volume and provide a strong hold, he advises. A good one to try: Kerastase Resistance Volumactive Conditioning Mousse ($33, www.drugstore.com). To create a natural part, Palau suggests brushing or combing back hair and letting it fall into place, then finishing the look by spritzing a firm-control finishing spray like Redken’s quick dry 18 instant finishing spray ($11.95, www.redken.com for salons).
