THE MAGIC'S IN THE MAKEUP
CELEBRITY MAKEUP ARTIST ALISON RAFFAELE HELPS US FACE THE SEASON WITH A FEW OF
HER PROFESSIONAL SECRETS FOR LOOKING—AND FEELING—FESTIVE
1. Go for the red
I know you’ve heard it a million times, but there is something about red lipstick
that just says excitement.
Physiological-
ly, the sight of the color red excites the senses. Here’s an interesting tidbit: research shows that although
women prefer
blue-based reds, men are attracted to yellow-based reds. So if you’re single, or
just looking to get your
husband to do a double take, keep that in mind. Also,
there
is absolutely no need for full-out matte red lips if that’s
not
your style; a red
sheer
lipstick or lip gloss can create the same effect. The important thing is to wear a red
lip color
you
don’t wear every day—it's party time, you know.
2. Lashes, lashes, lashes
The more, the better. Fake lashes are fabulous, but unfortunately, applying them correctly to yourself is nothing short of a miracle. So, if you don’t happen to have a makeup artist handy to help you, here’s what I suggest:
| First, curl your eyelashes with an eyelash curler | |
| Second, apply a coat of thickening mascara, starting with a wiggle at the base of your lashes and then sweeping the color all the way through to your tips. | |
| Third, use a clean mascara wand to remove any clumps, brushing outward along the top of your lashes while twirling the wand away from you. | |
| Fourth—and this is optional—apply a coat of mascara fibers (available through beauty supply stores). | |
| Fifth, repeat until satisfied. Bottom lashes are optional—do whatever looks best on your eyes. |
3. Pamper yourself
Go for a manicure and pedicure. Treat yourself to a massage or a facial. Take a long, hot bubble bath by candlelight. Get a new haircut and highlights. The only rule is that this pampering time is for you and only you. Husbands, children, pets and friends who talk too much should all be left at home—and for goodness' sake, turn off your BlackBerry. There are only so many special occasions in this life to get ready for, and since getting ready is usually half the fun, that time should be considered special, too. And remember: taking good care of yourself will enable you to take better care of everyone—and everything—else. So take care and enjoy doing so.
