THE DINNER PARTY

FORGOTTEN WHAT IT’S LIKE TO ENGAGE IN ADULT CONVERSATION, FINE FARE
(READ: ANYTHING BUT MAC AND CHEESE) AND GOOD OLD-FASHIONED FUN WITH YOUR
FRIENDS? YEAH, US TOO. HERE, ILANA ECK, AKA THE HIP HOSTESS, GIVES YOU HER
TIPS FOR AN EASY, AFFORDABLE AND MUCH-NEEDED NIGHT AT YOUR ROUNDTABLE.

POST-THANKSGIVING COCKTAIL PARTY

The Dinner Party’Tis the season for family gatherings. After you’ve had enough family time, give thanks for your friends by inviting them over for a fun post–Turkey Day cocktail party. This party is full of ideas for putting a hip twist on traditional Thanksgiving fare by using seasonal ingredients in unexpected ways. No sit-down dinner required; this menu is made for mingling.

SETTING THE SCENE

No-Fuss Cranberry Centerpieces
Fill clear vases, glasses or mason jars with fresh cranberries for an inexpensive cocktail-table centerpiece. Add ambient lighting by filling the vases a quarter of the way and nesting a pillar candle in the berries. Tie a gold, red or yellow ribbon around the vase to add more interest.

Mashed Potato Martinis
A great way to use leftover mashed potatoes! Mashed potatoes are made into cocktail party fare when served in a martini glass. Set up a topping bar by setting out bowls of shredded cheddar cheese, crumbled bacon, sour cream and chives. Let guests top their taters with whatever they please. Make sure you include spoons for eating. On a practical note: Rinse the martini glasses shortly after the party is over to spare yourself the trouble of scraping dried potatoes off your glassware.

Sparkly Fruit
Don’t wait until New Year’s to get your sparkle on. Use metallic spray paint to coat apples, pears and pumpkins and scatter them around for a super-festive feel. Metallic orange, red and gold is a great color combination and apropos for the season.

Cranberry Champagne Cocktails
Don’t bother running out for wine: Use leftover champagne and cranberry juice to make delicious champagne cocktails. Pour champagne into flutes and add a splash of chilled cranberry juice. Buy a bag of fresh cranberries and skewer three cranberries onto plain toothpicks. Put a toothpick garnish in each glass and serve.

Pumpkins, cranberries, potatoes and stuffing are all used in unexpected ways in this hip cocktail party menu. Several of the recipes can be made using leftovers from Thanksgiving Day, or can easily be made specifically for these delicious party-friendly dishes.
