I have always hated my nose, but am too scared to have a nose job. Should I just bite the bullet, or are there other alternatives I could try to make it look less prominent? –Gabby, Potomac, MD

Clearly you’re not alone when it comes to disliking the shape of your nose: almost 300,000 rhinoplasty procedures were performed in the United States last year, and according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, rhinoplasty was the second most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in 2005.

There are some contouring and shading makeup tricks and techniques that the pros use to make the nose appear somewhat smaller.  “It may sound complex, but it's so easy—anyone can do it,” says Ashunta Sheriff, a makeup artist for Dior Beauty. She recommends beginning by dipping a crease brush (like one used to deposit eyeshadow into the crease of your eyelid) into a powder bronzer that does not contain sparkle. Start at the inside corner of your eye and follow to the outer edge of the bridge of the nose, ending at the tip and then finish by dabbing a bit of bronzer on the very tip of the nose. “I also like to add a light shimmer down the center of the bridge and the inner corner of the eyes,” she says, noting that this technique helps draw attention to the eyes and away from the nose.

Something you might consider trying involves seeing a doctor, but is a non-surgical alternative. New York City Cosmetic Dermatologist Dr. Cameron Rokhsar has begun performing what he calls the “Non-Surgical 15 Minute Nose Job.” Using Radiesse, a cosmetic dermal filler that was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the long-lasting correction of moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, Dr. Rokhsar contours the shape of the nose, camouflaging nasal irregularities like bumps or sideway deviations of the bridge of the nose, to achieve a more symmetric look. The procedure requires no downtime and just a few quick injections to instantly give patients the nose they have always wanted. The procedure, including time to allow  a topical numbing cream to take effect, takes roughly an hour and costs about $1,500. This produce immediate results which last from one to two years.

I’m a serial coffee drinker, and I see that it’s beginning to take a toll on the color of my teeth. Do over-the-counter teeth whitening products really work? —Tia, Simi Valley, CA
Crest White Strips While nothing works as well as an in-office teeth whitening treatment performed by a cosmetic dentist, you will notice results from over-the-counter products. In fact, I’ve heard particularly rave reviews about the Crest Whitestrips Premium Plus Dental Whitening System ($34.99, www.drugstore.com), so see if that one will give you the results you desire. During the day, use a lip color with a blue-based undertone (a yellow-based undertone will only accentuate that in your teeth). Try Sexy Smile’s Late Night Bordeaux, a double-ended wand with lip color on one end and a tooth whitener/breath freshener on the other ($28.50, www.sexysmileonline.com). Sexy Smile

I have a really gorgeous sheer top but am not sure what to wear under it. A bra seems too racy, but a tank top seems too bulky. Any ideas?—Sarah Jayne, Denver, CO
Sheer tops are all the rage this spring, and selecting the right underpinning when wearing one is important (unless you’re into being a Stifler’s mom kinda mom, that is). I recommend trying the Perfect Cami by Hanes, which comes in nude, black and white, as well as in a variety of colors. It is 100% incredibly lightweight, silky cotton and features a tagless neckline for itch-free ease. You can’t beat the price, either ($6 for a 2-pack, www.kohls.com). Perfect Cami by Hanes
