Yikes! In order to help a fellow brunette-haired, highlighted sister out, I consulted Shari Cho, a master colorist at the Aveda Georgetown salon in Washington, D.C. “As time goes on, things like repeated washings, environmental factors and the use of heated styling tools often cause highlights to lighten a bit,” she explains. To tone down your brass but maintain your highlights, use a color-depositing shampoo and conditioner like Bumble and Bumble’s Color Support Shampoo and Conditioner in Cool Brunette ($22 each, www.bumbleandbumble.com).
