BABY FOOD FOR THOUGHT
TFG’S GOT THE SCOOP ON THE BEST EATS FOR YOUR INFANT’S LOVING SPOONFUL

Pre-baby, we wanted to make our own baby food à la Gwyneth Paltrow. Yes, in addition to patience,
spiritual explanations to the hows and whys of life, and memories yet to be made, all in Technicolor
and sweepingly scored, homemade baby food was on our to-do list.

Was.

Fast-forward to one 8-month-old, a flaky sitter, four loads of laundry, a housekeeper cut out of our
new recession-friendlier budget and a job (that other one that actually pays), and pureeing our own
baby food is about as plausible as maintaining our highlights (another thing GP does that we covet).

So, what’s a well-intentioned, nutritionally minded, overworked mom to do? Put “don’t compare yourself to Gwyneth Paltrow” at the top of your list and check out these eight great organic, whole-food, totally tasty, fresh-as-your-babe-is-young baby food options, available at your local grocery store. (Oh, and fire your sitter, hire a new one—check the local colleges—ask your colorist to stay late one night, tell your man to clean the downstairs and you’ll get the upstairs, and stop letting one load of laundry multiply—do it as it needs to be done.)

HappyBaby HappyBaby
HappyBaby offers fresh-frozen organic food with a menu that goes from basic peas and carrots (donned Yes Peas and Thank You Carrots) to gourmet selections like Mama Grain, a mix of organic bananas, quinoa and black beans, and Super Salmon, a mix of wild salmon and organic potato, sweet potato, carrots and French lentils. They use a freezing method to lock in vitamins, minerals and flavors—and make it easy for last-minute preparation: Just pop one of their superfood combos out of the ice-cube-tray-looking container, microwave to desired warmth and serve. Feel-good bonus: A portion of every purchase is donated to Project Peanut Butter, a nonprofit that provides food for starving children in Malawi. Available at specialty stores, such as Whole Foods Market, FreshDirect and Gourmet Garage.

Homemade Baby Homemade Baby
Instead of trying to reinvent the wheel, Theresa Kiene created baby food by giving her own childhood recipes an organic makeover. After friends and family began requesting batches of her food, she realized its potential and Homemade Baby was born. Unlike the other options, Homemade Baby foods are chilled rather than frozen, which the company claims is more effective at sealing in the fresh flavors and nutrition. And as an added bonus, if you are looking to drop a little baby weight, Theresa says her husband, Matt, lost 38 pounds by eating Homemade Baby foods as his mid-morning and nighttime snacks. Homemade Baby meals can be found in the refrigerator section of food retailers, such as Whole Foods Market, Highland Park Market and Publix GreenWise Market.
($0.99 to $1.19 per pouch, www.homemadebaby.com)

Lip-Smacking Sweet Potatoes with a Dash of Cinnamon & Vanilla, Butternut Squash-ed Apples with a Smidge of Sage—Jack’s Harvest may appeal to your palate as much as your little one’s. The organic ingredients are hand-selected by Jack’s mom, Heather, at local farmers markets and then prepared in small batches. After being taste-tested by Jack and his friends, the meals are then frozen and readied for public consumption.
