CELEBRATE DAD!
June is a special month for Dad. Father’s Day is a time
to celebrate all that he does for the family. Often, it is a
day to let Dad have some time on his own to sit in a
hammock sipping a cool drink with nothing to do. That’s a great way to celebrate, but your kids may want to do something more active to show their appreciation. Here are 10 ways to give Dad the day he deserves and make it fun for the whole family.
1. Serve Dad breakfast in bed. Usually Mom gets this royal treatment, but turn the tables and make him breakfast in bed with his favorite foods. Don’t forget the Sunday paper and comics for the kids to read with him.
2. Help the kids make a fun banner that says “You’re the Best Dad!” Using heavy card stock, cut out different shapes and draw a letter on each shape. Hole-punch each one and string yarn through the shapes. Hang from the door frame for a special greeting.
3. Instead of purchasing cards, the kids can make their own using construction paper and craft items, like sequins, glitter glue, yarn, etc.
4. During the week prior to Father’s Day, have the kids write down something they love about their dad and place it into a special jar or box that the kids can decorate. On Father’s Day, present the special holder to Dad for him to read all the things his kids love about him.
5. What’s Dad’s favorite fun thing to do? Does he love playing Frisbee golf? How about riding bikes? A ball game outing? Think about what he loves best and make a plan to do it with the whole family.
6. Are there any chores Dad continually asks the kids to do? Create a coupon book that divvies up the chores. Upon presenting the coupon, the kids will do the chores willingly. Make them good for a whole year.
7. Create a photo album of special moments during the past year with Dad. The keepsake can either be a digital photo album online or a physical album to present to him on the day. Make sure to add cute captions to each picture for added fun.
8. If the weather is good, have a barbecue, but let Dad rest in his hammock with the cool drink while the family does the cooking his favorite way—unless he insists on taking over!
9. Although it’s not Mardi Gras, it is his day. Make a crown for Dad using craft items, and bake him a King Cake (a traditional Mardi Gras cake). Hopefully, Dad will find the special good luck charm.
10. Give Dad time on his own to do as he pleases. Schedule out two to three hours for him to chill out on his own. The gift of unscheduled, nothing-to-do time is a precious one.
Happy Father’s Day!
