A HOME RUN FOR TEAM GREEN
Just imagine a warm summer night, your family
by your side, sitting in the stadium of your favorite
baseball team. Your stomach is stuffed with peanuts,
Cracker Jacks and soda. And then, the strangest, most
unexpected thing happens. You look up onto the large video screen in the center of the stadium. No, it’s not displaying the stats of the next hitter or the words to “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” Ten tips on reducing your carbon footprint are streaming before your eyes. Is it a dream? Could this really be happening? Clearly, the green gods have been hard at work. Baseball, the ultimate American pastime, has caught the eco-bug and is officially going green.
Major League Baseball partnered last year with the Natural Resource Defense Council (NRDC) to reduce the league’s environmental impact. Commissioner Allan H. (Bud) Selig stated:
“Just as baseball took a leading role in the development of relations between the races in the United States, with the appearance of Jackie Robinson for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, so must it turn its attention, efforts, and influence to other important social issues. One of those issues, which is inextricably linked to all aspects of our game, is care for the environment.”
Each team in the league has been appointed a Team Greening Advisor by the NRDC to help on items like developing an environmental policy, encouraging the use of renewable energy, using recycled paper products and offsetting the environmental impact of team travel. Teams have been adding solar panels, offering concession supplies that are compostable and biodegradable, and adding flow-restricting aerators in the bathrooms to save water. Here are some standout examples of eco-change happening in the world of baseball:
These are just a few examples of the many eco-friendly changes that are happening in your local stadiums. And keep your eyes out for eco-changes coming to the NBA, NHL and U.S. Tennis Association. So go root for your home team. Remember to recycle your cups and paper products. And support the team in winning their eco-challenges! I wonder if you can guess what team I am rooting for? Go green!
