MOM ON THE STREET
MOM-TO-MOM ADVICE ON LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF YOUR OWN GROOVE

Welcome to our latest monthly column, “Mom on the Street” (ya know, like “Man on the Street”).
Each month, we’ll be asking moms just like you for a slice of their sage advice, insider tips or
tried-and-true wisdom in the hopes that their unique brand of mothering inspires, assuages, calms,
strengthens and even amuses you.

This month's question: Summer lovin’ had Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta a blast. How are you having a blast this summer?

Kathy Kramer

Kathy Kramer is a NYC mom and former beauty director who created the Invisibelt (www.invisibelt.com). She hated the dreaded belt buckle bulge, so took matters into her own hands and designed an undetectable belt that has an instant slimming effect. She also recently launched a line of kids’ belts called Invisibelt Girls. Here is what this mother of one has to say:

“I’ve been escaping New York on the weekends and going to the Hamptons with my family. Not only are the beaches, fresh air and local farm stands amazing, but the walk-in closet (unheard of in NYC) isn’t bad either!”

Deborah Hernan and family

Deborah Hernan is the founder of Ottilie & Lulu (www.ottilieandlulu.com), a new line of skin, hair and body care products specifically formulated for girls between the ages of 7and 14. Here’s what this Manhattan mother of one has to say:

“Manhattan is a great playground, and we have a blast taking advantage of all a summer in the city has to offer: outdoor cafés, sprinklers in the playgrounds, Broadway musicals, concerts and performances in Central and Riverside parks and at Lincoln Center. Weekends at the beach help us to catch up on lots of great books, board games and constellation gazing. August is our travel month. This year we’re off to northern Italy to visit with dear friends and then to California to visit with family.”

Alison Smith and Debbie ZinmanAlison Smith and Debbie Zinman are the co-founders of ECHOage (www.echoage.com), an online eco-smart birthday party service that teaches kids about the importance of giving back. Here’s what these Toronto mothers, both with two children each, have to say:

“One of the greatest gifts of summer is that it is prime time to turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.

A regular cup of coffee is elevated to a not-to-be-missed morning ritual if enjoyed on a dock with the sound of rippling waves at your side. A walk to the store is elevated to a natural treasure hunt of things that thrive in the warm days of summer. A simple sandwich is elevated to the perfect launchpad for a lazy picnic on the grass. An average book is elevated to a journey into a time and place never experienced before. The night sky is elevated to a playground of wishes yet to be made.

Find everyday objects and rituals and imagine that they are extraordinary events in waiting. You will soon see that with the soft, lazy lens of summer, there is no such thing as just another day at the beach.”
