Just what is it about summer that makes our otherwise lovely
hair go out of control? Mother
Nature may never tell, so I asked
Dyana Nematallah, a stylist at Yves Durif Salon at The Carlyle
hotel in New York, where regulars include celebrities like Emma
Thompson and the first lady of
France, Carla Bruni. Here, she
tells THE FAMILY GROOVE about her favorite tips, cuts and products.
THE FAMILY GROOVE: What do we need to know about protecting hair in the summer that differs from the rest of the year?
Dyana Nematallah: During summer, hair is mostly exposed to heat, humidity and sunlight. A UV absorber is needed to protect hair color from oxidation and fading. You need to spray your locks before going out into the sun and water so that they won’t soak up all the chlorine and make your hair a disastrous mess to comb out.
TFG: Which sprays work best?
DN: Look for protective sprays that contain an amino acid complex to protect hair from heat and styling. My favorite one is the Priming Spray from Profound Beauty.
TFG: What are some of your other favorite hair products for summer?
DN: Kérastase’s Oleo-Relax and Profound’s Linear Cream. No matter how straight and fine your hair may seem, it still needs a little extra boost of moisture during the summer. The Linear Cream is great with fine, straight hair when used with some volume foam. I also never leave the house without putting some Design Paste by Profound in my hair to prevent it from frizzing.
TFG: I want a cut or style that’s no-fuss for the summer. What do you recommend?
DN: Some cuts that are absolutely no-fuss are shoulder length with some long layers scattered throughout the hair, or a super-cute feminine pixie cut for fine, straight hair. Shoulder-length hair is great for wavy/curly locks so that you can wash and go or twist up into a messy updo whenever needed. Steer clear of heavy bangs during summer!
TFG: What do moms with babies or little ones need to know about protecting their kids’ hair?
DN: While kids are out having some fun in the sun during summer, moms should definitely keep spraying detangler or leave-in conditioner on their locks. Kids do not and will not brush their hair. They are exposed to chlorine most of the time, and that combo together will make a full head of dreadlocks by the end of the summer!
