MOM ON THE STREET
Welcome to “Mom on the Street” (ya know, like “Man on the Street”). Each month, we’ll be asking
moms
just like you for a slice of their sage advice, insider tips or tried-and-true wisdom in the hopes
that their
unique brand of mothering inspires, assuages, calms, strengthens and even amuses you.
| This month's question: | What are your New Year's resolutions? |
Devin Reed is the creator of Molar Muncher (www.molarmuncher.com), the hands-free teether that soothes the gum line. Here's what this Miami mom of two has to say: "My most important New Year's resolution is to schedule more date nights with my husband. With two small kids at home, the focus is usually on them, so I look forward to spending more quality time with him in the coming year. I think as a mother, it is important to remember you have to work at keeping your marriage alive as hard as you work at raising your kids." |
Linda Rogers is the founder of Kipsy and the Magic Beans (www.kipsytoys.com), a line of toys designed to soothe your child's fears at bedtime. Here's what this Wilton, Calif., mother of two has to say: “I love New Year's and the whole idea of starting fresh. We always stay up until midnight and go outside to bang pots and pans. The kids love it. This year, I have a couple of New Year's resolutions. First, I'm telling myself that I need to organize our family pictures. I've been saying this for a couple of years now, but I've always put the rule on it that they must be in chronological order to look good. Well, I am finally letting go of that idea because I have pictures everywhere! I have them in drawers, in bags and tucked away in my closet, too. If I have to put them in order, I'll never do it! So, I have already bought a few photo albums and I'm going to place them in after Christmas. I can't wait to get started. Just seeing all the pictures again has brought our family together on the floor in the evenings sharing precious memories together. It's been great! My second New Year's resolution is a simple one. I just want to relax and play more! The other day, I was outside playing catch football with my son and it was an hour of pure bliss. There were no e-mails to answer, no ringing phones, and the day was beautiful. We laughed and played while smelling the wood-burning fireplaces of our home and the neighbors’ homes. It was crisp and cold and I felt invigorated afterward. I told myself right then and there, ‘I need to do this more often.’ I will be putting play on my to-do list in 2012." |
Karee Blunt is the creator of Build a Menu (www.buildamenu.com), an online meal-planning service that makes shopping and staying on budget easy and fast. Here's what this Burlington, Wash., mom of five has to say: "January is always a great time of year to do some self-reflection and decide what areas of my life need some attention. I’m not big on making resolutions so much as I am on taking a look at my priorities and seeing how they line up with what’s actually going on in my day-to-day world. Between being a homeschool mom to five children, running Build a Menu and keeping up with life’s responsibilities, by the end of the year it’s easy to let my priorities slip and fall into a survivor’s mode of just trying to get through each day without letting anything important fall through the cracks! This year, my goal will be to take a good look at the following four areas of my life: • Our homeschooling schedule: Are we on track? Is it going as smoothly and effectively as I planned at the beginning of the school year, or do we need to make some changes? • My family’s character development: Each month, we choose a new character attribute to focus on (joy, patience, self-control, etc.), and January is the perfect time to re-evaluate how that’s working for us. • My personal daily schedule: Am I doing the things that are important to me (like taking walks with my husband, reading something that interests me, spending quality time with loved ones) or have I let my schedule fill up to the point that there’s no time for those things? • My business life: Bringing Build a Menu to life this year has been tremendously rewarding. Not only do I want to take a good look at how being CEO of such a busy website takes a toll on my daily life, but I’ll also be setting new goals for where we want the business to go. (I also need to remember that I’m supposed to be running it, instead of it running me!) I’m looking forward to all that 2012 has to offer—happy New Year!" |
