| I love to flat-iron my hair, but I am concerned that it’s causing me to totally fry it. Are there any safer flat irons out there that are gentler on your hair? —Jen, Gaithersburg, MD |
While using heated styling tools on your locks is a pretty surefire way to damage them, there are products you can use that will make the experience much, much easier on your hair. Prior to flat-ironing (or blow-drying, curling, etc.), I recommend safeguarding your strands with a good dousing of heat-protective spray like Frédéric Fekkai’s Coiff Defense UV Protectant ($25, www.sephora.com). When choosing styling tools, look for ones with ceramic heating elements, which produce gentle, moisturizing and less damaging heat. For curling irons and flat irons, select one with tourmaline ionic plates, as they will allow for heat to be evenly distributed to your hair, preventing hot spots that lead to frying. Another good feature to look for is adjustable temperature controls. You don’t always need to employ an ultra-high heat setting to achieve your desired style, so if you can cool it down—even just a bit—your hair will thank you. A brand I love that offers all of these options is Sedu, which is sold at Ulta stores nationwide and on www.folica.com. I recommend checking out the line’s new Revolution Professional Nano Tourmaline Ionic Styler, which can safely get your hair pin-straight, but also create waves and curls ($139.95, www.folica.com). |

Amanda Uprichard clothing I was born and raised in the South, which has undeniably influenced my girly, color-saturated style. Sure, I love black, but it’s bright yellow tops and Cookie Monster–blue dresses that truly make me a happy gal. I recently fell in love with—and, of course, purchased—a couple of Amanda Uprichard’s colorful, silky tops at my local Nordstrom, and have gotten a million compliments every time I’ve worn them. The lesson: Color is definitely your friend. Check out her wares at www.lisakline.com, www.singer22.com and www.activeendeavors.com. |
