| I have naturally curly hair that I love to blow dry straight or get blown out professionally. The problem is, I have pretty oily hair, so I’m lucky if it lasts more than one day. Is there any good way to prolong a blowout?—Lori, Natick, MA | |||
| With the right prep and post-blowout tricks, you should be able to extend your blowouts for at least two days. Whether you’re performing your own blowout or getting it done at a salon, begin by going light on the styling products pre-dry. Often, creams, lotions and serums attract oil and dirt, which will leave you looking greasy quicker. Instead, try a straightening gel like Phyto’s Phytodefrisant Botanical Hair Relaxing Balm, a perennial favorite of kinky-haired gals everywhere ($26, www.sephora.com). Post- dry, if you must apply a finishing gloss, do so on ends only. Avoid touching or brushing your hair throughout the day—doing so will only deposit more oil onto your hair and/or get your scalp’s oil glands moving. When it comes time to wash your face before going to bed, getting your hair wet is the fastest way to ruin your blowout. To avoid doing so, secure your hair away from your face with an elastic band or clip, and protect your hairline from getting wet with a terrycloth headband like ModelCo’s Tiara Soft Cotton Headband ($10, www.sephora.com). Repeat this same process when it comes time to shower, and finish by covering your hair a large shower cap - those flimsy hotel-issue plastic ones won’t sufficiently cover your hair. My favorite: Benefit’s girly Bathina Shower Cap ($16, www.benefitcosmetics.com). If your hairline does get wet, touch it up immediately with a dryer and a round brush. If you do notice you’re still oily the next day, lightly spray your part or any oily areas with Bumble and Bumble’s oil-absorbing hair powder – it’s colored, so you won’t look like you doused your hair in baby powder ($19, www.drugstore.com). When all else fails, think ponytail or headband! | |||

| What are the best kinds of socks to wear with tall boots, assuming I’m not wearing tights?—Susan, Racine, WI | ||||

Ideally, you want a high, stocking-like sock that allows you to slip your boots on and off with ease. Anything too thin may make your boots fit too tightly, and anything too short can make them fit unevenly. I really like Spanx’s Two-Timin’ Reversible socks because they’re thin but substantial, nice and stretchy and have a no-cinch band at the top, which means no red marks when you take them off. Additionally, they work great with loafers and flats as well, and because they’re reversible (one side is black and the other is brown), you can get double the wear out of them. Pick up a pair—or three!—for $12 at www.spanx.com or at higher-end department stores like Saks and Nordstrom. | |||
| I recently relocated from Buffalo, NY to Tucson, AZ and my normal (and expensive) Crème de La Mer skincare products are all of a sudden making me break out! Do I have to ditch them? I’ve been loyal for years!—Tamara, Tucson, AZ | ||

When you’ve made a radical climate change, you usually have to make a radical skincare regimen change as well. Chances are your former cold-weather routine is just a tad too rich for your skin’s new dry, hot Arizona home. Lucky for you, La Mer offers products that are tailor-made for warm-weather climates (as well as for those who reside in cold-weather areas but have oilier skin types). Instead of La Mer’s Cleansing Lotion, try the Cleaning Gel, and swap your original Crème de La Mer for The Moisturizing Gel Cream, a lighter, gel-like textured version of the original. If you’re finding yourself looking shiny, you might also want to apply the line’s Oil-absorbing Tonic after cleansing and before moisturizing. With these new, lighter versions of your old favorites, your skin should be behaving in no time. And, of course, don’t throw out your old products—save them for when you visit somewhere where the weather’s sure to be chilly. Products are $60-220 at www.cremedelamer.com. | ![]() |
