THE MOTHER NATURE
THE FAMILY GROOVE’S PROFILE OF A MOM WHO’S MAKING IT HAPPEN
Gone are the days of the traditional coffee clutch, because at THE FAMILY GROOVE, we’re doing it new
school,
bringing people together to laugh, learn, share and commiserate in the global village called the
Internet.
This month, we want you to meet Tali Gillette. She’s the kind of woman you want as your friend.
Interminably
cool, down-to-earth and genuine, this actress-and-producer-cum-hot-jewelry-designer
(her Mama Necklaces
grace the décolletages of many a celebrity) has the rare ability to get it. You know?
She just gets it. Her keen
insight, strong (but not preachy) point of view and lust for life make you tilt your
head, lift your chin, look back
into your mind’s eye and reshift your thinking, in a kind of an aha way.
Here, Tali talks about being a runner, the importance of wishes and her charming business, plus she touches on something that all women wonder: Why didn’t I appreciate how thin I was when I was younger?
1. Who are you?
Tali Gillette
2. How old are you?
39
3. Where do you live?
Hoboken, N.J.
4. How many children do you have? How old?
One terrific 5-year-old boy
5. What time do you get up?
With the sun or my son, whichever is up first.
6. What daily rituals must you do to feel normal?
Kiss and hug my son good morning, mainline a Starbucks solo campana, log on to DrudgeReport, scan my BlackBerry, talk on the phone to my blessed sister and girlfriends.
7. What do you wish you’d do every day, but haven’t been able to incorporate into your routine?
Relax.
8. Do you work?
Yes
9. What do you do?
I guess you could say I’m a runner.
10. Tell us about it.
Well, I run a jewelry company, run a household, run to the grocery store, run my dishwasher.
I launched
www.taligillette.com, a jewelry company, in 2005 with a signature piece known as the Mama Necklace. It is a diamond and gold line of jewelry that says your baby’s first word,
mama, in an eternity circle. Women have always worn their engagement rings and wedding bands as a symbol of milestones in their lives; the Mama Necklace is a stunning way to complete the trilogy.
11. What does being a good mother mean?
Being in the moment and playing with my child, expressing how loved he is and instilling the foundation for a secure, independent, happy person.
12. What’s your mantra/personal philosophy?
I believe in wishcraft. If you really want something, you can achieve it. Believe and ye shall receive.
13. What do you tell other mothers?
A mother knows. She doesn’t need other mothers telling her anything. Each child is so vastly different from the other, different things work for different people—there is no formula, just instinct. I like to share laughter and sympathy with other moms.
14. Finish this sentence: I want my child to know…
…we are all fallible and he is loved no matter what.
15. Who inspires you?
Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama
16. What are you passionate about?
My family, entrepreneurship, my faith, art, the view of the Hudson River out my window.
17. How do you balance your life as a woman, a mother, a friend?
My husband is an extremely generous person and a hands-on dad. All week the mom/businesswoman/friend is in action; on weekends I get time to myself and I take it!
18. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?
That I really
was thin! Ha-ha! Everything falls into its right place in the end.
19. How do you get into your groove?
Daydreaming and fantasizing about the next big thing, whether it’s expanding my jewelry line, a charitable organization I’m hoping to launch, a film I’m going to see or checking out a new playground with my son. By the grace of God, I wake up each morning looking forward to something the day offers, and that gets me ticking.
