| I have decided to go with cloth diapers. It was a big decision, but I just couldn’t stomach going the disposable route. Which ones do you like? —Kim, Brooklyn, NY | |

I commend you. I really do. I couldn’t do it. I wanted to but I didn’t—I global warming-ed out. The reality is that nowadays it is a lot easier to be a woman of the cloth. Check out the Cotton Diapering Kit from Bummis ($145, www.amazon.com). It comes complete with super-soft and absorbent unbleached cotton diapers that are pre-folded for easy-on and easy-off, plus waterproof diaper covers. It’s a great starter kit and makes for a very cool and thoughtful gift. It also helps to dispel the myth that you’ll be doing laundry constantly, as the newborn kit (for babes eight to 15 pounds) comes with 36 diapers, which is more or less enough for three days. The infant/toddler kit (for little ones 15 to 30 pounds) comes with 24 diapers. I bet you’ll find yourself getting into all the cute diaper covers, too. There’s a whole counterculture of moms out there who are obsessed with cloth diapers. Seriously. They’re called hyenas. Check out our article on the phenomenon. Happy hunting! |

Here’s a cool idea that I am way into right now. It’s not for a newbie, but your friend will have enough swag for that stage. Check out Your Baby Can Read! (www.yourbabycanread.com). The company believes that there is a natural window of opportunity (from 3 months to 5 years) during which kiddos can learn the written word naturally and easily. I am sure you’ve heard about this system before, as it’s been on all the talk shows and in the news. I’m going to try it on my 8-month-old and my 3-and-a-half-year-old, who is starting to learn to read in school. I am a little obsessed with it, actually. I mean, people swear that it works. Granted, my baby can say, oh, about four words, but, hey, if he can start to get the hang of this reading thing, then more power to him. The Deluxe TV Kit, complete with five interactive DVDs, 25 sliding word and picture cards, 50 word-game cards, a parents' guide and more, is $199.99 and will certainly stand out among the burp cloths and onesies. | ||

PumpEase Antsy moms rejoice! Hands-free pumping is here—it’s slightly weird looking and yet kind of chic, and not only will you get used to it, you’ll wonder how you ever had the patience to pump without it. This little tube-top-looking bra-like thing (à la a bandeau circa 1983) wraps around your nursing bra to hold your pumps in place, giving the milkmaid the chance to check her e-mails, read a book, write out thank-you cards and more. Available in fun prints, this breast-feeding essential gives new moms the freedom they need to actually get something done. Amen to that. ($34.99, www.gotbreastpump.com) |
