OUR RESIDENT ECO-ACTIVIST, HEATHER WOLFSON, D.C., OF TWIGANDTWILL.COM,
GIVES US HER TAKE ON THE CAUSE AND EFFECT THAT IS MODERN DAY CHARITY
Here are five words that will save your life and change how you donate your money:
the cause is the cure.
It was almost 40 years ago that President Nixon declared the war on cancer, and since then we have done
nothing but waste money and precious time that could have been spent telling people what the real cause
of cancer is and, therefore, what the cure to cancer is. We’ve been “racing for the cure” for decades now
and have gone nowhere because we are ignoring the most basic fundamental part of the disease itself:
the cause.
Does it make sense to give a medication that purportedly cures a disease if we never get rid of what caused the disease? Should we continue on our toxic path that led us to ill health, never addressing the real cause of the disease? If we have a headache, should we just pop an aspirin to cover up the pain? Or should we look a little deeper to find out what is causing our headache to begin with so that we may correct it and prevent another one from occurring in the future? If I had a string tied tightly around my finger that eventually caused a throbbing pain, should I take an aspirin or should I remove the string?

According to the World Health Organization, 20,000 people die of cancer and miscarriages each year in developing countries as a result of the chemicals sprayed on conventional cotton. Farm workers around the world are suffering from serious health problems relating to an overexposure to hazardous pesticides, including asthma, neurological damage and cancer. It takes roughly a third of a pound of chemicals (pesticides and fertilizers) to grow enough cotton for just one T-shirt. Eighty-four million pounds of pesticides were sprayed on the 14.4 million acres of conventional cotton grown in the U.S. in 2000, ranking cotton second behind corn in total amount of pesticides sprayed. Conventional cotton farming uses approximately 25 percent of the world’s insecticides and more than 10 percent of the pesticides (including herbicides, insecticides and defoliants). The Environmental Protection Agency considers seven of the top 15 pesticides used on cotton in 2000 in the U.S. as “possible,” “likely,” “probable” or “known” human carcinogens. Carcinogens are cancer-causing agents. These chemicals are the same chemicals used on our conventional food crops, which eventually make their way to our dinner plates. So what does all this mean? These chemicals do not just affect our soil, but they also contaminate our oceans and our groundwater. This groundwater is the primary source of drinking water for half of the U.S. population. Pesticides, fungicides, herbicides, irradiation and genetic engineering all cause cancer.
We are not born with disease. It is a cumulative process that develops over time from exposure to something toxic. Did you know that more than 40 percent of the U.S. population will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime? Did you know that 1 out of 150 children are diagnosed with autism today? Did you know that since 1980, asthma has gone from 6.7 million cases to 21.3 million? Why? There are more than 150,000 different chemicals in use today, from household cleaners to vaccines. We are in a perpetual flow of chemicals from the moment we are conceived until the moment we die. If you wait until your child has autism to stop vaccinating, isn’t it already too late? If you wait until you have cancer to change your diet, lifestyle and environment, isn’t it already too late? If we wait until an animal is on the endangered species list, isn’t it already too late? If we wait until the icebergs in the Arctic melt to be environmentally conscious, isn’t it too late? Why do humans wait until there is a catastrophe to make a change? Prevention is the key and is the only way we will heal this planet and its inhabitants. We do not need to find cures for these diseases; instead we need to eliminate what is causing these diseases.
So what does this have to do with where you donate your money? Everything! Why not send your hard-earned cash to organizations that have known the cure all along? Here are three of my favorites:
The Organic Consumers Association (OCA) is an online and grassroots nonprofit 501(c)(3) public interest organization campaigning for health, justice and sustainability. OCA has a strong commitment to the safety, well-being and health of our people and our planet.
The Weston A. Price Foundation is an organization that fights for grass-fed free-range meats (not grain-fed), raw dairy and organic produce. We should not have to fight for animals that are raised for food to be treated humanely or fight to give them their natural diets. Corn is not a natural food item for cows; they eat grass. They also shouldn’t be administered hormones and antibiotics, a common practice among conventional farming. My husband, a board-certified cardiologist, recommends eating plenty of grass-fed or wild meat, as it contains all the necessary omega-3 fats and fatty acids that our bodies need to be healthy. He also says we should never consume grain-fed cows or any other grain-fed animal, as this is what leads to ill health, from cancer to heart disease. In addition, according to the Weston A. Price Foundation, “pasteurization of milk destroys enzymes; diminishes vitamin content; denatures fragile milk proteins; destroys vitamins C, B12 and B6; makes calcium un-absorbable; kills beneficial bacteria; promotes pathogens; and is associated with allergies, increased tooth decay, colic in infants, growth problems in children, osteoporosis, arthritis, heart disease and cancer.” If you’re going to consume dairy, make sure you find a raw dairy source for all your dairy intake.
The National Vaccine Information Center is an organization that aims to give children the right to grow to their greatest potential without violating their pure bodies with chemicals from vaccines intended to protect them from harmless childhood diseases like chicken pox, measles, mumps, rubella and more. Mercury is still in the flu and tetanus vaccines, and all vaccines still contain toxic and carcinogenic (cancer-causing) ingredients like ethylene glycol (antifreeze), aluminum (linked to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and seizure disorders), formaldehyde (embalms dead bodies), human and animal blood, and more. The number of cases of childhood diseases, including autism, ADHD, arthritis, brain tumors, seizure disorders, leukemias or any childhood cancers, for that matter, are staggering. We have traded in benign childhood diseases for life-threatening, debilitating and deadly ones.
So if you’re ready, willing and able to give this season—or any season—make a donation that actually makes a difference.
