Do you sea what I sea? I see stunning sea glass jewelry that's handmade from genuine beach-combed seaglass. Here we talk to Mary Beth Beuke, founder of West Coast Sea Glass, about sea glass and the wildly popular jewelry she creates with it. TFG: Why did you start your business? Mary Beth Beuke: As a little girl, I spent my weekends along the beautiful Oregon coast often beach combing for hours on end. That paired with a penchant for beach travel over the past few decades has given me the opportunity to collect a treasure trove of the world's rarest pieces of sea glass. I also have created jewelry all my life and am a trained silversmith. All the layers came together about fifteen years ago or so ago when I bought a home on the beach and in it I built a studio to house my creative, beachy finds. The sea glass made a natural fit to the jewelry and it is there that I create daily. Now we sell our rare sea glass jewelry over the world from 42 different galleries and boutiques. TFG: Tell us about the name. MBB: Our collection has really outgrown its name but the bulk of our pieces really do come from traversing and kayaking thousands of coastal miles from the southernmost point in the US in the Hawaiian Islands all the way up the Pacific's west coast to Kodiak Island, Alaska and around the Pacific Rim.  These are the waters that I look out on from my studios and that have been called "home" all my life. It seemed a natural fit and has stood the test of time now. TFG: What makes West Coast Sea Glass stand out? MBB: We know that each piece of sea glass is unique and that each has been on a lifetime journey at sea. Therefore, we keep track of our pieces and categorize them by ocean, by color and by quality. We've worked hard to stay a pioneer in the sea glass industry by studying a lot about bottle history and maritime history. We given lectures at museums, beach combers events and on radio where we identify and describe pieces and other's collections.  We make the story of sea glass and the ocean the piece was found on available in print to each and every person who owns a piece of our jewelry. TFG: What is your proudest moment as a business owner? MBB: It happened about two years ago when the enchantment of our "story" preceded the jewelry business end of things and not the other way around. The Seattle Times did a six page cover story on our company, which was highlight enough.  But as a result a beach loving, ecologically conscientious buyer for Eddie Bauer placed a several hundred piece order. She wanted each customer to have their very own piece of ocean history. I remember the day an out of town friend of mine said he saw our jewelry in a pretty display in one of their many stores. Our glass has also been featured on the Travel Channel, in National Geographic, Coastal Living and Parade magazines. TFG: What's new for the season? MBB: Since red sea glass is considered to be the rarest color, we usually post some of our most prized pieces in our latest settings for the holidays. KB: The design is unique, because it is immediately identifiable as a mother whose hands are either cradling her child or carrying her baby during pregnancy. KB: My proudest or ah-ha moment was being able to connect the dots and realize that the creation of the jewelry design, gaining the design patent, gaining the rights to the Mother Nurture Collection trade name and starting the business would not have been possible without the development and influence of my family.
