Outta Sight Site Spotlight: TheMemoriesPlace.com

March 25th, 2011
Okay, so we know that memories light the corner of your mind (especially those of us who suffered through three hours of Cats when we were eight) but did you know your most treasured memories can also light your bed, your couch, the park and your chilled shoulders, too. Thanks to TheMemoriesPlace.com, you can keep your best times alive with a photo blanket (or pillow too!). From weddings to baby showers to Mother's Day to birthdays to just because, you can do no wrong when you give one of these keepsake gifts. Here, we talk to John Lercari about the business he and his wife started out of a desire to work together and create a useful product that warmed the world with love and happiness. Not only are the blankets top quality (and truly well-priced) but the company prides itself on fostering a good experience from start to finish. Says John, "We offer  a 100% guarantee on all of our work. No hassles. No questions. We might not be next door or around the block so we want our customers to feel totally comfortable." Superior customer service, accountability, good prices and gift that brings joy to its recipients every time it's used—now that's something to remember the next time you're looking for that perfect present. THE FAMILY GROOVE: Why did you start your business? John Lercari: My wife Rachel and I started this as we were looking for something to do together. The kids were grown and out of the house and it seemed like we had less time together. She was doing party planning with Christmas Around the World and I was working days selling electronic security systems. For years, we had been searching for a business we could grow together that fit our lifestyle and our needs. As we were looking for gifts to give to friends and relatives we came to realize that the days of buying and giving "dust collectors" were over. Instead, why not give a gift that was not only stunning but practical? We all have memories and so many times they are stored in shoe boxes in the closet. Why not give a gift that lets the recipient wrap their memories around themselves? TFG: The Baby Photo Blankets and the Collage Photo Blankets stand out as really super gifts to give. What are the most popular items on your site? JL: The collage photo blanket is enormously popular. Sometimes you want to give a personalized gift and one image just doesn't say enough. The collage photo blanket can provide a timeline of a person's life, their accomplishments, their family. It can show off your favorite pet or a child's journey from birth through their teenage years and even beyond. Second to collage photo blankets are our pet photo blankets. The love affair we all have with our pets cannot be overstated. Whether it is a thoroughbred horse, a fancy feline, a mangy mutt or anything in between, they are part of the family. Photo blankets celebrate life! TFG: Your Military Photo Blanket is a great idea—and one that we haven't seen before. What inspired you to create this product? JL: I must admit that the idea for Military Photo Blanket came from experiences I had coming back from a war that was incredibly unpopular many years ago. I wanted something that could be used to celebrate a person's service to our country. A military photo blanket can say thank you for a deployment, a career, or commemorate the life of someone who has given the ultimate sacrifice. Military photo blankets can be given to a loved one, a family member or to the service member. TFG: Tell us about your affiliate program. JL: Our affiliate program is in its infancy but it came about as a way for website owners, bloggers and others to earn commissions on the sales of people they refer to us. We have relationships with schools and groups and this became an easy way for them to track their sales. It has evolved from there to individuals and companies. TFG: What is your proudest moment as a business owner? JL: My proudest moments come from the comments of my customers. People whom I've never met but feel I know personally. In so many cases they not only send me their photos for a photo blanket but through email or on the phone they tell me the stories behind the gift. I feel as if I know their thoughts, their feelings, their families, and we work together on the project. Their words of thanks, their stories about how their loved one opened the photo blanket and broke down in tears of joy. Those are my proudest moments. I guess you could say we take the "personal" in personalization very seriously. We are not a superstore. We treat each and every customer as we would like to be treated. Rachel and I answer our phones and we enjoy speaking with (not talking at) our customers. We realize that your images are telling the story of your life. TFG: What's new for 2011? JL: We will be coming out with more photo blankets geared to specific holidays and careers. We will also be expanding our line to include new personalized gifts that we feel will offer more choices to our customers. There is no right or wrong time to give a photo blanket. There is no right or wrong image or groups of images to use. They are your memories, it is your gift of love to someone. Outta Sight Site Spotlight: ClassicCommunication.com

January 25th, 2011
Despite what Facebook, MTV and reality shows would have you think, making a good impression is still important—as is having a sense of decorum. And nothing makes a better impression than a lovely handwritten note (be it a thank-you, love, reminder or just-because note). For those reasons and more, Classic Communication is one of my favorite places to shop for stationery. In fact, I have a personalized memo pad that I use multiple times a day and absolutely live for. It just makes me happy to see the names of my besties ever so elegantly imprinted along the border of each sheet (it's just like the one shown here to the right). Here, Classic Communication's founder Barbara Patinkin, a dyed-in the-wool entrepreneur whose positive energy and passion for what she does is palpable (no wonder her business has lasted for 17+ years!), talks about the modern-day state of communicating, how a good impression helps with everything from applying for a job to sending a gift and why classic never goes out of style. THE FAMILY GROOVE: Why did you start your business? Barbara Patinkin: Printing and communication are my fields of expertise. I owned and operated a graphic arts studio in New York City where we produced direct marketing campaigns, catalogs, sales sheets and created corporate identities. When I moved to San Francisco I wanted to use these skills in a retail setting and realized that personalized stationery and invitations were a perfect match. TFG: Why did you choose the name Classic Communication? BP: At the time, personal computers were a decade old and were changing how people connected. I did not relate to computers at that time and thought that a handwritten note would always have more meaning to the recipient because it was more personal and the classic way of communicating . . .Classic Communication. TFG: You've been in business for 17 years. What's changed about great stationery (invitations, announcements, et al) and what's stayed the same? BP: The biggest change in the invitation category are the unique die cut designs now available. We offer a great selection of invitations for adult celebrations, children’s parties as well as corporate events. There is a greater selection of themes and accents for traditional and contemporary invitations. Personalized stationery is having a resurgence because it delivers the personal touch people always respond to. Also, when interviewing for employment, a handwritten note before and/or after gets you noticed and sets you apart for the other candidates. TFG: Giving a set of thank-you notes or personalized stationery as a gift is such a great idea. What are your suggestions for choosing the right design/style for a particular friend, associate or family member when you are not completely sure of their own personal taste? BP: When selecting personalized stationery as a gift for a colleague or to use as a business gift, I recommend a blind embossed design. The imprint of a blind embossed design is raised from the stock, has no ink and ivory stock “shows” the imprint more distinctly. For family or friends use your best judgment in terms of personal or professional use. Popular combos are mocha ink on ivory stock, slate ink on white stock, hunter green ink on ivory stock, navy ink on navy stock. We also have a new border design for correspondence card and folded note that has been very popular. You can select ink, stock, border color and lettering style. TFG: What is your proudest moment as a business owner? BP: The proudest moment for me is, and always will be, a satisfied customer. TFG: What's new for 2011 (products, ideas, initiatives, etc.)? BP: There are always new invitation and announcement designs. We have special discounts on a regular basis for our great selection of personalized correspondence cards, folded notes, letter sheets, tablets and memos. Our current 15% discount ends February 28. For more from Classic Communication, go to www.classiccommunication.com.

Brownie Eyed Girl

September 23rd, 2010
Peekaboo, I see you. And you look delicious. As I type this, I am realizing that it wasn't a smart idea for me to be blogging about Sweet Christine's at night—because I promised myself I wouldn't eat past 6:30 and I so want dessert. All I want in life right now is one of those brownies that's on the Sweet Christine's website. The fun part about being gluten-free (or whole heartedly doing my best to be gluten-free) is discovering all of the yummers gluten-free treats out there for me to sink my sweet-tooth into. Okay, I am serious, go to the Sweet Christine site right now and check out the pics of the cupcake, cookies and brownies. Go. I'll wait. Do those brownies look good or what? The owner, Christine, hence the name of her business, also does organic, homemade, gluten- and wheat-free doughnuts, bread, muffins, pizza crust and more. She also provides some helpful celiac resources on the site, from centers and experts to book recommendations to documents on the subject. Okay, now back to me and my stalking of her brownies. Brownies, you will be mine. Oh yes, you will be. For more stalk-worthy treats, go to www.sweetchristinesglutenfree.com.

Picture Perfect

September 17th, 2010
I was recently at a birthday party, chatting to the other moms about how I've never had my kids professionally photographed, except for one fantastic shoot by the great Linda Rowe when my daughter was less than a year old. She is five now. Five. And I have a two and a half year old son. I also lamented about how I am getting better at remembering to take pictures but I am still really bad at setting aside time to download said pictures from the camera on to my computer. And actually sending them to my family—well, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. In a Judith -Warner-Perfect-Madness kind of way, the other moms shared about how stressful taking their kids for pictures is and how much preparation goes into it. Phew, I thought, because there's simply no way I'd have the time to deal with the preparation (or the wherewithal to handle the stress) so I guess it's all for the best—or so I told myself to make myself feel better. These moms also recounted stories of overzealous moms they knew who took their kids to have professional pics taken at every major holiday plus their birthdays and how one mom takes her kids monthly. Whoa. Well, obsessively pro-photoing your minis aside, if your little girl's got a birthday coming up or if you're prepping for holiday pics (we'll get to the boys in another post) then I've got a place for you to shop where you can knock out your photo-opp outfits in a cinch sans the stress but avec the fabulosity that your pictures deserve: Stephanie's Wonderland. The girl-in-the-world one-stop-shop carries pettiskirts, tutus, hair bows, headbands, wings, flower hats, leggings, aka the requisite sweet-n-sassy gear that make any photo ooh- and aah-worthy. For example, pair a birthday frill-icious tank top with a tutu and strap on a big ol' headband and little miss thang is ready for her close-up. Mommy: One; Stress: Zero.

Wrist to Cuff, Please

September 8th, 2010
I am not a huge jewelry wearer anymore. Heck, with two kids and a business, I'm barely a makeup wearer anymore. And some days I am lucky if I remember to be a pants wearer anymore. So, when I do wear jewelry, I have to love it. It has to be the kind of piece that makes me lust for it every time I feast my ever-so-rushed eyes on it. I also look for multi-purpose pieces that can be worn to funk up jeans and a tank top as effortlessly as they can be made the statement piece de resistance avec an LBD. Now, I shall gush over my latest crush: The Family Love Ladder Bracelet from Bella Merce. (Insert gasp, high-pitched squeak followed by guttural grrr here and let the stalking begin.) The hand-stamped sterling silver ladder bars showcase your loved ones' names and a pretty design of your choice. It's so sweet, simple and sentimental (sans schmaltz) but still funky and cool because of the mixed medium and the fact that it could look like a cuff. I am envisioning my naked wrist happily donning this dapper darling along with my favorite pair of flared jeans (back in this season) and a tank (I also see my arms a la Linda Hamilton's in Terminator—hey, a girl can dream, can't she?) and with the versatile LBD I bought for my SIL's wedding and can't wait to wear out to dinner with my man in the city at one of my favorite restaurants (again, a girl can dream, can't she?). At $97, it's actually not too expensive either. In fact, it's a fair price for a holiday or birthday gift (not too much, not too little—this one's juuuust right) or a girlfriend gift, if you went in on it with another friend or two. Yup! This one's a good one. It hits all the Mommy marks. Bella bonus: Get 10% off with code HOLIDAYGROOVE. For more from Bella Merce, go to www.BellaMerce.com.

Princess Superstar

August 18th, 2010
When I was coming up in the mid-90s NYC music scene, there was a singer called Princess Superstar. She couldn't sing, really, but her act was as noteworthy as her name. In a fashion you'd expect of a girl named Princess Superstar, she'd prance from one end of the stage to the other and yell "Princess! Superstar!" as a sort of punctuation to each destination. Many years later (as said a la Sponge Bob). My daughter has a Barbie cash-register-type-thingy that proclaims "Come back soon, Princess" after something-or-other is pressed on said thingy. "Come back soon, Princess"—it used to get me. The first few times I heard it echoing out of my daughter's room, I was angry about it. What about saying "Come back soon, President" or "Come back soon, Doctor" or "Come back soon, Wonderfully talented girl who knows her worth and can accomplish anything she sets her mind to"? What kind of message is this plant in fertile minds? Why do they still make this kind of toy? And why am I allowing it? After a few days of hearing (and being agitated by) the seemingly vapid sentiment, the answer came to me: Girls like princesses; girls want to be princesses. And irrespective of how many Wayne Dwyer children's books you read to them, most girls of a certain age will go for the princess whenever they get the chance. What my feminist girl-power mind had to understand was that the concepts and ideas that we teach and show our daughter are just that: concepts and ideas. She gets them; they are a part of her, strategically implanted into the DNA of her ways of being, ways of thinking and ways of doing from the time she was born. These ideas and concepts will continue to germinate and blossom as she grows to create a confident, empowered, absolutely fabulous human being; but a princess is a princess—no subtext, no propagation, no germination, no blooming required. For little girls, a princess is (or at least can be) all of the above, adorned in a pretty dress and a tiara. And so, I let her go with it. In fact, I support her in it. I wax ever-so-indulgently on this subject because of an every-little-girl's-fantasy site called Princess Fancy Pants. The name says it all! From doll clothing to bows to clippies to flower hats to dresses to the sacred Holy Grail of girliness, aka tutus, Princess Fancy Pants is the kind of place that makes my little girl draw in a breath, mouth agape, open her eyes widely, raise her shoulders and throw her head back—kind of like this highly accomplished, confident, together and wholly happy woman does when she looks at the Net-a-Porter site. A-ha. I guess you can take the girl out of the princess but you can't take the princess out of the girl. And you know what? That's actually a good thing. Princess bonus: 20% off with code 20PRINCESS

Toe the Line

July 11th, 2010
Keep your tootsies ready for their close-up all summer long with a handy dandy Pedi-tote from Belle Sorelle. Between camp, work, play dates, errands, birthday parties, cleaning, gardening and maybe a minute or two of some good old-fashioned summertime fun, there's little time to devote a 30-to-45-minute to a pedicure. Geesh! Even the thought of sitting at the nail place for that long gives me the willies. (Or maybe that's the green tea and coffee I just drank back to back.) We are moms and we are busy—but we still want to look good. The Pedi-tote comes complete with rust-resistant stainless steel pedicure tools, a pumice, stone, flip-flops and a cute carry-all. Whether it's an early morning, pre-beach, at-home toe-makeover or quicker-fixer-upper before you don your favorite open-toe heels for date night, this easy-care kit makes keeping those feet of yours looking fresh and fabulous on the fly. And, if you do have 45 minutes (and haven't consumed copious amounts of caffeine), bring this terrific toe-te with you to your next pedicure appointment and breathe easy knowing that your darling doggies are in good hands (hands that are using sanitary tools!).

What You Need

June 29th, 2010
So, I just went looked up the lyrics to "What You Need" by INXS—as if I had to say "by INXS," right? Yeah, well, apparently, I did because some dude named Taio Cruz has a song called "What You Need" too. Man, that makes me feel old. I kind of know who Taio Cruz is because I caught an episode of "The Hills" and they played his song "Break Your Heart" over a bird's eye montage of a pristine and oh-so appealing Los Angeles. (By the way, a well-chosen song it was. Damn you, Brody, you heartbreaker, you!). Without further ado or lamenting on how 34 feels like 74 lately: Hey, here is the story Forget about the trouble in life Don't you know, it's not easy When you gotta walk upon that line That's why - You need That's why - This is what you need I'll give you what you need Don't you get sad and lonely You need a change from What you do all day Ain't no sense in all your crying Just pick it up and throw it into shape Hey you, won't you listen This is not the end of it all Don't you see there is a rhythm I'll take you where you Really need to be Quite apropos to a mom's life, huh?
