Outta Sight Site Spotlight: ShowerHug.com

February 9th, 2011
What do we dig more than supporting and empowering women? Well, nothing. That was the number one reason why we started THE FAMILY GROOVE a little more than five years ago. So when we encounter companies with the same uber-goals, we are instant fans. As was the case with the Shower Hug. Not only was the company divined to aid moms during their most sensitive times (both emotionally and physically) but its overarching goal is to give moms a much-deserved hug, so to speak, by reminding them to take care of themselves, mind, body and soul. Here, we talk to the Shower Hug's founder Andria Sgro about the pregnancy and breastfeeding must-have she invented out of need, the choices she made when she found out her child had Down Syndrome and a serious heart defect, how her sister saved the day and why time-outs are so important—for moms. THE FAMILY GROOVE: As the cliche goes, "Necessity is the mother of invention." Foyou and your sister, not only is The Shower Hug itself borne of necessity but the idea of owning and operating your own business was as well. Tell us about the origins of The Shower Hug. ANDRIA SGRO: Alaina and I are partners in Belmama & Cherub LLC and are the proud creators and distributors of the Shower Hug™. My life and dreams changed forever when I learned I was pregnant with my first child. I once enthusiastically worked as a CPA, but quickly forgot about the world of numbers and analytics with one glance at my little one. Never was I so fulfilled or content than in my new role as “Mama.” It was in my new role as stay-at-home mom that I conceived the idea for the Shower Hug. It struck me when I was struggling to comfortably shower in the early days of motherhood and breastfeeding. I never would have imagined that showering would become so difficult and uncomfortable after the arrival of baby! Lingering in long, hot showers is a favorite retreat of mine, but the force of the shower spray hitting my tender breasts was too painful to tolerate. Engorged, tender breasts and cracked, bleeding nipples needed protection from the shower streams! I had looked forward to the solitude of a long, hot shower all day, but as soon as I stepped in, I was hurrying to get out. My doctor advised holding a towel over my chest when showering, which was not practical and made tons of extra laundry. I tried dodging the shower sprays by keeping my back to the streams, which did not allow me to easily shampoo, shave, etc. And, I shopped and shopped and shopped, looking for a product that would help me. My search revealed there was no such product to treat this problem. As I became more involved in the “mommy” community, I learned that I was not alone in my struggle. Many mothers quietly struggle through the pain and discomfort, but I knew there was a better way. As you said “necessity breeds invention” and as a born problem solver, I was determined to create a solution. Enter The Shower Hug™ by Belmama & Cherub LLC! I formally founded Belmama & Cherub and began production of the Shower Hug in 2006, just one day after my son's first birthday. I was a full time SAHM so early evening, late night and those wee hours of the morning were dedicated to developing and promoting the Shower Hug.  In September, 2007 I gave birth to my second child, a little girl. Maria was born with Down Syndrome and a serious heart defect. Open heart surgery was necessary within the first 5 months of her life. I focused on my number one priority: Seeing my beautiful baby girl through a very frightening time. Motherhood and the fragility of life took on a whole new meaning. Thankfully, my sister Alaina volunteered to step in and help with the business when my energy was needed elsewhere. Alaina worked diligently to learn the business and promote the Shower Hug. She did everything needed to drive the company forward, while giving me the opportunity to be a full-time mom before, during and after Maria’s open heart surgery. Thankfully, Maria is a vibrant 3 year old now and she is absolutely thriving. I invited Alaina to join Belmama & Cherub as a partner shortly after Maria’s surgery. We work together very closely every day, even though separated by thousands of miles (I live in San Diego, CA and Alaina lives in Princeton, NJ). Emails fly through cyberspace and calls are placed at the oddest hours and sometimes with a lot of noise in the background (between us, we have five children), but the arrangement works beautifully. The Shower Hug is now widely available in birthing centers, maternity boutiques and online retailers and the business keeps us busier than we ever imagined! TFG: What are the benefits of The Shower Hug, in and out of the shower? AS: The Shower Hug is a bandeau wrap that is designed to make showers a time of serenity and renewal for pregnant and breastfeeding moms who experience breast tenderness. For many moms, their only “me-time” in a day is their time spent showering. Alaina and I believe that showers are a time to cleanse the body and renew the spirit. They are about rituals. They are about relaxation. They are a mini “time-out” and sore boobs should not get in the way of Mom’s precious alone time! Hormonal and physiological changes associated with pregnancy and breastfeeding can cause Mom’s breasts and nipples to be uncomfortably sensitive to touch and pressure – including the pressure of shower streams. Shower streams can actually “sting” the breasts and nipples, causing Mom’s time in the shower to be rushed and awkward as she tries to prevent the shower streams from pelting her chest. Harsh additives to shampoos and soaps can further irritate sensitive skin, especially around the areolas and nipples. When Mom wears the Shower Hug while showering, she can relax in her shower while enjoying the Shower Hug’s many benefits! The Shower Hug provides gentle bust line support for heavy/engorged breasts (particularly important when breast milk first comes in and when weaning), it provides a soft barrier between Mom’s delicate breast tissue/skin and pelting shower sprays and harsh ingredients in toiletries, and it absorbs the warm shower water to create a soothing warm compress affect which helps soothe symptoms of engorgement, plugged milk ducts and even helps to ease pain associated with mastitis (although mastitis typically requires treatment by your MD and may require an antibiotic regimen as well). Mom may also wear her Shower Hug outside of the shower to hold therapeutic warm or cool packs (warm-packs before a feeding promote let-down, cool-packs help ease engorgement) with hands free convenience, and it is the perfect breast support to sleep in as it is nonrestrictive, soft, absorbent and easy to nurse baby while wearing. There are other incredible uses for the Shower Hug ~ perfect for wear during water birthing, great for women who experience cyclical breast pain or mastalgia, and those undergoing treatment for breast cancer or recovering from breast surgery. The Shower Hug is made of an incredibly soft, double sided fabric that is stretchy, absorbent and light weight. It is the perfect fabric for wear in the shower, and it won’t get heavy or sag when wet. It stays in place without the use of shoulder straps, which means that there is no weight pulling on Mom’s shoulders or uncomfortable “digging in” of straps. We also provided an ample 4” Velcro closure to provide for size adjustability and to allow Mom to obtain her ideal fit and level of support. Moms’ bodies change drastically over the course of pregnancy and breastfeeding, so the adjustable closure allows Mom to enjoy her Shower Hug for a long period of time. TFG: The idea of breastfeeding has come a long way over the past four years since you first launched your business. It's much more accessible and en vogue thanks to companies like yours who are making quality products for new moms. Where would you like to see The Shower Hug and the pregnancy-to-postpartum-to-breastfeeding milieu in the future? AS: Breastmilk is proven best for baby and it offers important physiological benefits to Mom too. Breastfeeding is what Mother Nature intended and we hope that it continues to grow into an honored and widely accepted practice here in the United States and across the globe. For this to happen, moms need support—support from the medical community, support from companies like us who seek to create effective breastfeeding accessories, and support of their husbands, family and friends. Our primary goal now and into the future is to support Mom in her endeavor to successfully breastfeed. The breastfeeding experience between Mom and baby is truly precious, and one that neither party should be without simply due to discomfort or pain. Mom’s comfort and needs are so often overlooked after the arrival of baby. The Shower Hug is an easy way to put Mom first for a few stolen moments each day as she rejuvenates herself in the serenity of her shower! Our name (Belmama & Cherub LLC) is a tribute to the beauty of motherhood. “Belmama”—Beautiful Mother. Motherhood is awe-inspiring and at times gut-wrenching. It requires big-time sacrifice but is rich with immeasurable rewards. We say to Mom: “Hug” yourself daily and go reap those rewards. TFG: What's your proudest moment as a business owner? AS: Without a doubt, our proudest moment was when we received our patent. The patent process was long, arduous and expensive. It required several rounds of re-work, and finally was issued on August 17, 2010! TFG: What's new for the season? AS: After receiving rave reviews of the Shower Hug, and specifically how much our customers love our fabric, we decided to extend the Shower Hug’s comforting touch to little ones as well through a coordinating line of wash cloths, burp cloths and infant bath sheets. We currently offer a “value-priced” bundle including one Shower Hug and one set each of wash cloths and burp cloths, and we plan to add at least one additional value-priced bundle to make our line of products more accessible to moms who want the very best for themselves and their little ones. We are also in the process of redesigning our website, so look for our re-launch this month. For more from Alaina, go to www.showerhug.com. Give Her a Hand

December 14th, 2010
Every time the Target commercial with the mom who multiplies into many a mom to get through (ever so chipperly) her holiday decorating to-do comes on, I think about how great it would be to have more than one of me. I instantly hop the train down to Imagination Street and think about how much I could get done if I could clone myself. Oh, just the thought of it is so liberating. Moms need robots and/or magical powers. Hang for a minute whilst I add that to my list for Santa. While I'm gone, I suggest you add the same to yours. Pause.  And I am back. For those of you who have already sent out your letter to the big man and have a little one in your midst, check out the Bottle Snuggler. The Germs

December 9th, 2010
Are a late 70s/early 80s punk rock band. Are on shopping carts and totally gross me out. I am actually not a germophobe but, for some reason, shopping carts super gross me out. And by the looks of the booming cottage industry of shopping cart covers, many a parent are freaked out too, apparently. When my daughter, now 5, was first born, shopping cart covers were just breaking onto the scene—and they were pretty dang ugly. I always wondered why they had to be made from such hideously patterned fabric. Did it take a certain level of ugly to sufficiently scare away the germs? Nowadays, there's a wide variety of shopping cart covers available but the handmade ones from The Sassy Princess really stand out amongst a sea of eh. So, if you're going to spend your hard-earned moolah on something and use it weekly (if not more), shouldn't it be fabulous? And trust me, germs are just as scared of fabulous as they are of ugly. Germs hate adjectives. Kelly, the talented owner of The Sassy Princess, makes a high design, high quality cart cover, complete with an ultra padded seat cover, bottle pockets, toy loops, minkie dot pillow and carrying bag. You can choose from a wide selection of chic fabrics and even gets yours monogrammed. Baby will be sitting pretty in the lap of luxury, you'll love your precious purchase and the now demoralized germs will be fabuloused into oblivion. Trendy mom: One. Gross germs: Zilch For more shopping cart chic, go to www.thesassyprincess.com (you'll also find cool nursing covers, stroller covers, back packs, bottle bags and more).
