If I had new mommyhood to do over again, I would definitely go the cloth diaper route—and I wouldn’t work so much.
Live and learn (and insert tinges of guilt here).
These days, it’s easier than ever to use cloth diapers, aka do the green thing when it comes to your baby’s health and the health of dear old Mother Earth. Not only that but cloth diapers are so darn stylish that it’s actually a lot of fun.
Here, we talk to Carolann Schiro, owner of Diva Diapers, a trendy cloth diaper boutique that treats babies and their mamas to the best that green-chic has to offer, about the current state of diapering, what’s hot for the season and what you need to know about becoming a woman of the cloth.
THE FAMILY GROOVE: We love how you’ve dolled up cloth diapers and made them kind of glamorous and fun. What inspired you to start DivaDiapers?
Carolann Schiro: We purchased DivaDiapers in 2007 after discovering that there were no cloth diaper stores in our area. We wanted to be a resource for local families when they had any questions concerning cloth or other baby or pregnancy related questions.
TFG: For the mom or mom-to-be who’s on the fence about going the cloth diaper route, what can you say to push them over to the cloth side?
CS: You’ll be amazed at how easy using cloth diapers really is! You’ll also save THOUSANDS over the course of your baby’s time in diapers. If you have more than one child, that savings can easily multiply.
TFG: There are so many great cloth diaper brands . Tell us about some of the newer lines that our readers should know about.
CS: There are so many brands available now which can be great but also a little overwhelming to those first starting out. Our favorite diaper right now is the Flip system by bumGenius. What we love about them is the simplicity and absorbency they provide.
TFG: You also carry other pregnancy- and new-mom-related items like ovulation test strips, nursing pads and reusable menstrual pads. Any plans of expanding?
CS: We’re looking at opening a retail space that will offer breast pump rentals, nursing bras and baby carriers as well as a resource center for pregnant moms that will offer doula services, childbirth and breastfeeding classes and much more.
TFG: What is your proudest moment as a business owner?
CS: Any time we can convert someone to cloth and have them come back and say “You were right. It really is so easy. I only wish I would have started using cloth on my first baby.”
TFG: What exciting new products are on the horizon?
CS: We’re looking forward to attending the ABC baby expo in September which is where manufacturers release all their newest products. We’re super excited about attending this year as a few manufacturers have hinted at some really great new designs.
