THE MOTHER NATURE
THE FAMILY GROOVE'S PROFILE OF A MOM WHO'S MAKING IT HAPPEN

The days of the traditional coffee clutch may be over, but at THE FAMILY GROOVE we're doing it new school,
bringing people together to laugh, learn, share and commiserate in the global village called the Internet.

This month, we want you to meet Karen Gurwitz, a mother of three who's got a lot cooking these days.
Karen is a pioneer in the field of mother-related health and well-being, having launched the progressive
Mothers & Menus in 2003 as a service for new mothers and their families during the hectic weeks after the
birth of their child. With a goal to teach all mothers how to take care of themselves, this entrepreneur,
parenting coach and author will change your life with her sage advice and right-on perspective.

Here, our mom of the month, shares a slice of her everyday life along with her recipe for feeling groovy.

1.  Who are you?
Karen Gurwitz
Karen Gurwitz, Nika, Sophie, Ethan
2.  How old are you?
37

3. Where do you live?

New York, NY

4. How many children do you have? How old?

Three: Nika is six, Sophie is four-and-a-half and Ethan just turned two.

5. What time do you get up?
Between 6:00 and 6:30am.

6. What daily rituals must you do to feel normal?

Running and having some time alone (sometimes those are one and the same).

7. What do you wish you'd do every day, but haven't been able to incorporate into your routine?

Yoga.

8. Do you work?
Yes.

9. What do you do?

I run an organic meal delivery service called Mothers & Menus. I am a parenting coach and a marketing consultant, and I recently wrote a cookbook.

well rounded pregnancy10. Tell us about it.
The Well-Rounded Pregnancy Cookbook is a cookbook filled with nutritious, delicious and simple recipes—with a twist. The recipes offer adaptations to fit how you feel—so if you are feeling nauseas, you can modify the recipe based on the Feeling Green adaptation; if you are craving comfort foods, you can go comfort and stay healthy with Feeling Food; and if you are looking to lighten up, you could try Feeling Full. The book is filled with stories from clients of Mothers & Menus who were pregnant at the time and had toddlers. These women tried out the recipes in real world settings. We adapted the recipes based on their feedback and simplified where possible to make it a cookbook for fresh, healthful family meals that would come in handy long after baby is born. The main message of the cookbook, and in everything I do, is take care of yourself first so that you can take care of everyone else around you.

11. What's the best thing your mother ever told you?
The truth about her own fears. And also that the last thing you should do before the guests arrive is jump into the shower so that you are refreshed and ready to entertain.

12. What does being a good mother mean?

Knowing that your children are here on their own spiritual path and staying connected to them regularly to understand their needs.

13.  What's your mantra/personal philosophy?
Take care of yourself, take care of yourself, take care of yourself. You can’t take care of others, if you’re not taking care of yourself.

14. What do you tell other mothers?

See above.

15. Finish this sentence:  I want my children to know

That they are always loved; that I am giving it my all; that they inspire me to be the best person I can be.

16.  Who inspires you?

My children. My husband. People who are petrified and do it anyway.

17. What are you passionate about?

Passion. Aliveness. Feeling your feelings —whatever they may be.

18. How do you balance your life as a woman, a mother, a friend?
I don’t. I drop the ball every once in a while to make sure that I am focusing on what I truly want and need and not on keeping everything under control.

19. What do you wish you knew then that you know now?

That it all turns out.

20. How do you get your groove on?
Hmmm. With three kids and full time jobs, we don’t have time to get into the groove. We just plop a video on the TV and lay out some snacks for the kids, lock the door and hope for the best!
