TFG EDITOR-IN-CHIEF JILLIAN SWARTZ TALKS AUTISM

Editor

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 1 in 10 children in America have an autism spectrum disorder.

1 in 10.

So, since April is National Autism Month, I am devoting this column to a few things that can, hopefully, help anyone who is seeking information on the subject.

No muss, no fuss, no snark, just a list.

Here it goes:

The Autism Book

1. Read this month's interview with Dr. Bob Sears for the early warning signs of autism and get his book on the subject (a definite must-read) called The Autism Book: What Every Parent Needs to Know About Early Detection, Treatment, Recovery, and Prevention.

Autism Heroes

2. While you're at it, pick up Autism Heroes: Portraits of Families Meeting the Challenge by Dr. Barbara Firestone, president, CEO and founder of The Help Group. The book chronicles 38 families confronting the challenges of autism spectrum disorders and will change how you think of ASD.

3. Support The Help Group. Read our profile of the progressive and proactive organization.

Jennifer Brown

4. Read Jennifer Brown's story about her struggles with her son's autism. Seriously, read this one.

Autism Shops

5. Check out these sites for autism essentials, including toys for sensory integration, biomedical supplements, special diets and more:

www.autismcommunitystore.com

www.autismshop.com

www.got-autism.com

www.autismsuperstore.com

6. Head on over to Autism Society of America. Founded in 1965, the Autism Society of America (ASA) has 200 chapters nationwide. The site offers parents clear and concise information on the disease as well as an opportunity to meet other parents of autistic children at its national ASA conference.

Autism Speaks

7. Get to know Autism Speaks. Founded in February 2005 by Suzanne and Bob Wright after their grandson was diagnosed with the disease, Autism Speaks (AS) has quickly become a go-to resource. The site offers a good overview of the disease and links to national and local organizations as well as blogs written by the parents of autistic kids.

Girl Power 2 Cure

8. Read our profile on Rett syndrome, the severe form of autism that only affects girls.

BloomPutty For Autism

9. Buy some Bloom Putty. First of all, let me say that they are a client of ours, but client or not, they have a terrific product that works in a number of dynamic ways to, at once, de-stress and stimulate little minds.

Gluten Free Diet

10. Look into a gluten-free diet for your child.
